While the European Parliament was discussing the 7th Research Framework Programme on Research, a group of academics and politicians who are supporters of “therapeutic” cloning launched a new petition. In it they called on the parliament to ensure that the Programme should confirm the funding of research projects on stem cells obtained from so called “supernumerary embryos”, and that eligibility to funding be extended to research projects on nuclear transfer which has more appropriately been called “clone and kill” or ‘therapeutic cloning”. This lobbying is being encouraged by International Planned Parenthood (IPPF) that is endeavouring to get as many signatures as possible to try to persuade the parliament to support this kind of destructive research. During the recent meeting of European Council of Ministers for Science and Research, representatives from , , , , and opposed the funding of embryonic stem cell research in the 7th Framework Programme that will establish the allocation of the European funds for the period 2007-2013.
