The clinic, which caters for lesbian and single women's IVF, says that the severe shortage of Australian donor sperm is due to potential donors' fear that they might have to face paternity claims by their offspring.

Canadian doctors were not slow to criticise what they called "reproductive tourism". Dr Roger Pierson, of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society, said that local law had to put brakes on the "commodification of human gametes".

In Hobart , fertility specialist Dr Bill Watkins described the shortage of Australian sperm as "desperate" and called on Tasmanian men to volunteer. He assured them that although potential children might be able to make contact in later life, donors would have no responsibility for them and the children would have no claim on their estates.

His clinic at St Helens Private Hospital told the Hobart Mercury that the donation process includes a medical examination, screening for infectious diseases, semen assessment and access to copies of Penthouse Black Label.
